What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a Martial Sport, which has developed from many other Martial Arts, including Karate and Muay Thai (Thai-Boxing). It involves kicking, punching, elbow strikes and knee strikes. It is taught at the Black Dragon in its original form and provides a strenuous work out, improving fitness levels and flexibility. All KickBoxing students, non-contact and contact, have the option of being assessed through a series of levels / grades, with the base level being White Belt, through seven levels, finally reaching a Dan grade at black belt, which is equivalent, if you like, to a degree level in Martial Arts. This type of achievement would take, on average, between four and a half to six years depending on how often you train.

Is kickboxing dangerous?

Not at all. All beginner classes are strictly no contact, progressing to controlled sparring with no head contact as you gain more experience. Sparring is closely supervised with full protection gear including head guards.

How long does it take to become proficient at it?

Galway Black Dragon Gym runs six-week introduction courses throughout the year which cover all the basic technique and training practices. From there you can progress through a belt-based grading structure which can represent a lifetime of study. Please note; Gradings are optional – you are not in any way compelled to grade!

What if you are not fit?

No problem. As long as you are physically healthy and willing to try you willbe fine. As you progress your fitness will improve and you will become stronger, more confident and more flexible.

Do I need to make a big commitment of time or money?

Not at all – Initially beginners classes are held once a week and when the 6 week course is finished you are given the option to train as often or as little as you wish with various classes from Monday to Saturday.

Individual class fees are €8 per class for Adults & Juniors but as a member you can avail of a discount for 3 or more classes in a week and there is no uniform requirement, just loose comfortable clothes eg: shorts/track pants & tee-shirt etc.

Please note: Due to Covid 19 health & Safety guidelines, we are no longer in a position to loan out Gloves or shin pads etc so anyone wishing to train must have their own.

If you want, you can purchase  kickboxing equipment from the club at discount prices.

Am I too old for it?

Age is a state of mind.

As long as you are healthy, there is no reason not to enjoy the benefits of kickboxing training.

The sport exercises unused joints, improves flexibility and builds up general fitness & health.

Where is my nearest club?

The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club is based on the Sean Mulvoy Road in Galway City in between CT Electric & CW (Eircode H91 TC9C).

We have two boxing rings in the Gym for safe sparring and pad work  and  Fighters must have  all their own  relevant safety equipment such as sparring Gloves, Shin & Instep Pads, Headguards, Mouth Guards etc  and strict supervision is adhered to at all times.
